April 5, 2024 - Blessed Are Those Who Hear and Obey

Deuteronomy 28:1-68

Luke 11:14-36

Psalm 77:1-20

Proverbs 12:18

Luke 11:27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”

28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

This makes me think of the Catholic church belief in praying to Mary and venerating her. Calling her The Blessed Mother and having specific prayers and songs written to be prayed to her. Jesus says here that those who hear the word of God and obey it are the ones who are blessed. We know that Mary is one of those people but this statement puts all believers on equal ground. I believe that Mary herself would not want to be placed in such a high position. She demonstrated humility and a servant's heart over and over again. But it probably doesn't surprise her since in her song in Luke 1 she says '46 ...“My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,"'. Which I think was more about her recognizing for herself the blessing that is given to her to be the Lord's mother. It is another statement of humility not a statement of being better or more important than anyone else who is willing to humbly serve the Lord.

33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.

When we hear have ears to hear the word we see the clear message that tells us to love God and love people. Serve God and serve people. And this is how we can do that. Shine the light of Jesus so that everyone can see it!
