JOB 16:1-19:29

1 CORINTHIANS 16:1-24

PSALM 40:1-10

PROVERBS 22:1

Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord;

    he turned to me and heard my cry.

Waiting patiently is different than waiting because you have no choice.

Psalm 40:2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,

    out of the mud and mire;

he set my feet on a rock

    and gave me a firm place to stand.

If I am in a slimy pit of mud and mire it could take some time to be lifted out of it. Mud and mire have a tendency to suck you back in. But the Lord CAN lift me out and give me a firm place to stand. On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand.

Psalm 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth,

    a hymn of praise to our God.

Many will see and fear the Lord

    and put their trust in him.

He gives me something to sing about. Him! He is worthy of praise! The more I praise Him above all else the more people will see Him and trust in Him.

Psalm 40:4 Blessed is the one

    who trusts in the Lord,

who does not look to the proud,

    to those who turn aside to false gods.[or to lies]

Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord! When we are looking to God and praising Him we won't be praising ourselves pridefully or praising false gods. I included the footnote to this verse because I think it is important to realize that false gods are lies but also lies can become false gods. When we come to believe a lie especially one that sucks us back into the mud and mire they are becoming false gods to us. They distract us from the one true God and become bigger in our minds than the truth that trusting in Him will lead to blessing because He is greater than any lie or false god. Greater is the one living inside of me than he who is living in the world.
