LEVITICUS 23:1-25:23

Leviticus 23:22 “‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the Lord your God.’”

Reading through these passages which is usually very tedious for me has shown me connections to other parts of the bible. This verse makes me think of Ruth. Ruth was poor and a foreigner who was residing among the God's people because she loved her mother-in-law and stayed with her even after her husband died. She went out to glean in the fields so that she could provide for herself and her mother-in-law. Last year when studying the book of Ruth I had seen a beautiful picture of Jesus. Boaz had his men watch over her to protect her and pull extra wheat out and leave it for her to provide for her. Just as Boaz who knew that he was her kinsman redeemer protected her and provided for her before she knew who he was, Jesus does the same for His bride. As I study election and predestination I know that Jesus has known since the beginning of time all who He will save when He gives Himself on the cross. Even before we knew who He was He protected us and provided for us. When we were poor in Spirit and a foreigner to Christ, He allowed us to glean in the fields of faith and He laid what we needed before us to provide for us and protect us. He even set up this instruction to the people to leave gleanings of their harvest knowing that one day Ruth would be gleaning in Boaz field. Ruth who is Jesus great-grandmother.

Leviticus 254 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest.

This makes me think about the 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine in Egypt that Joseph ruled over. I know that this law did not apply to the Egyptians, but the commonality of the number 7 has me curious. Seven, Jesus number, the number of perfection. This lead me to look into the number 7. I found this Bible Project blog about the number 7. It is an hour long but it is divided into chapters so you can listen in sections. I hope you find time to check it out.
