January 12, 2024 - Well, Well, Well now we have some room

Genesis 26:17-27:46

Matthew 9:1-17

Psalm 10:16-18

Proverbs 3:9-10

Genesis 26:22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

Isaac's servants did the work to dig 2 wells before this which is no easy task. When the people of the land quarreled with him and claimed it as their own Isaac did not argue with them. He could have. His people did the work and he could have accused them of wanting to have the benefit of the well without doing the work. But instead each time he moved on. Until no one quarreled about it. How can he just move on? After all that is so unfair isn't it? Shouldn't he be angry? Maybe according to our worldly standard. According to our sense of what is right and fair we could even justify that it would be righteous anger. But instead he knew that God could make even his enemy live at peace with him and that He is in control. So there was no reason to fight because God must have something better waiting for him. And He did. Rehoboth mean

s room. That is what was needed for a nation to grow. It didn't come easy. They had to keep working, digging well after well. But in the end it was worth it.

Genesis 26:28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”

Here we see God making potential enemies allies. God was revealed to king Abimelek through Isaac. And he was afraid of God of Isaac and what would happen to him if he opposed Isaac. He knew that if he opposed Isaac he opposed God. Isaac didn't do anything to make this happen it was all God. God's provision, protection and abundant blessing was evident even to those who didn't know God. How cool is that. Live for God trust Him and let people see the power of God in your life and He will also reveal Himself to them.

Matthew 9:4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?

Jesus knew their thoughts and what was in their hearts. He knew that their evil thoughts came from a lack of rightness in their hearts. They were teachers of the law but they didn't have the law right.

Matthew 9:12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

This struck me as funny because He is speaking to the religious leaders who were questioning why he was eating with sinners as though they were not sinners. As far as they were concerned as the elite of God's chosen people as long as they followed the rules they were not considered sinners and were righteous. I hear a little sarcasm in Jesus words. We know that He knew what was in their hearts and that they were just as in need of salvation as the tax collectors and sinners that He was eating with but he didn't call them on it. He spoke as though they were the healthy and the righteous. But in reality they needed the doctor as much as the rest and were probably less righteous than those sinners who had turned to him in humility. Because their hearts were humbled toward God and they knew their sin and their need for a savior. Have you ever known someone who needed to go to the doctor and everyone knew it but when you told them they said they are fine, and they know what to do or they don't need a doctor because they aren't sick? Even if Jesus had said something to them it would not change them. They would have been so insulted to be associated with the tax collectors and sinners that it would have turned them even more passionately against Jesus.

No matter what we say and do Jesus knows what is in our hearts and he knows our thoughts. There is no reason to try to hide any of them from Him. Humble yourself and be honest with Him. Let Him heal your heart mind and soul and be free!

Every day we all make choices that go against the will of God. Rebekah is no different from us. Every time we make a choice to believe the lies of this world rather than the truth of God we live in sin. God speaks to us every day and sometimes we hear him and we listen and we do His will. But sometimes…. We hear Him and don’t do as He asks.

Rebekah went against God’s will and her husband for something or someone she loved very much.

Every day we make that same choice. We choose the things of this world, rather than the grace of God. This is why Jesus had to die on the cross, because w…

Just an observation….Im surprised of Rebekah. Wouldn’t she be fearful of her husband and especially God for her actions? It seems back then women would have been more submissive. Why did she favor one son over the other?

Replying to

God had told her that she was having 2 sons and that the oldest would serve the youngest. So I think she favored him because he was the one that was more like her and spent the most time with her just as Esau was more like Isaac and spent more time with him. If we are honest we all have favorites. Maybe she justified what she did for her favorite son by remembering what God had told her so she was just helping God out. Like Sarah giving Abraham her servant to have a kid.
