January 14, 2024 - He Calls You Friend

Genesis 30:1-31:16

Matthew 10:1-23

Psalm 12:1-8

Proverbs 3:13-15

Before you read stare at the picture for this post without blinking for at least 30 seconds then look at a white surface and blink real fast.

What did you see?

You should have seen Jesus. That is called an after image. The eye keeps reflecting the image that it was looking at and the longer you stare at it the longer the image will last.

10:1 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

On retreat this weekend we just talked about John 15:15 when Jesus tells the disciples that he calls them friend. When Jesus talks about people who believe in Him, He often referred to them as sheep. Sheep are helpless animals in need of protection. But the disciples were His friends. They were not helpless they were given authority to drive out demons and heal people. What is the difference? Frequency. They spent all their time with Him. Once they became a follower of Jesus they no longer looked to the things and ideas of the world. They spend all their time with Jesus. The more time they spent with Jesus the more they reflected Him.

Psalm 12:1 Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;

    those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.

Everyone lies to their neighbor;

    they flatter with their lips

    but harbor deception in their hearts.

How much time you spend looking at things of the world in comparison to looking at things of God? The world is full of wickedness and distractions. Do you spend even half the time looking at the things of God as you do at the things of the world? How much time do you spend on your phone scrolling social media, Pinterest, watching YouTube videos or TV? Whatever you are looking at the most is going to have the longest after image on your life. Also the more time you spend with people and things of the world the more your life will reflect the morals and ideals of the world.

Proverbs 3:13 Blessed are those who find wisdom,

    those who gain understanding,

14 for she is more profitable than silver

    and yields better returns than gold.

15 She is more precious than rubies;

    nothing you desire can compare with her.

I hope that this blog is helping you to spend more time looking at Jesus. More time in His word seeking His wisdom. More time in prayer. More time with Jesus and other friends of Jesus. Because the more time you spend with Him the stronger your friendship with Him becomes and more of His image in imprinted on you. The more you will reflect His image to this dark and broken world.
