January 17, 2014 - Come to the Altar

Genesis 35:1-36:43

Matthew 12:1-21

Psalm 15:1-5

Proverbs 3:21-26

Genesis 35:2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.

False gods are anything that we hold onto that keeps us from worshiping the One True God. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Those are the things we need to remove from our lives when we make room for Him. Don't just set them aside. Remove them throw them away. Bury them and walk away from them and towards God.

Genesis 35:6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

Then set up things in our lives that will remind us of what God has done for us so that we can keep Him in the front of our hearts and minds. Jacob built an altar where God came and revealed Himself to Him. Meditate on where when and how God revealed Himself to you and consider setting up a spiritual marker to remind you of who He is and what He has done so that in times of difficulty and struggle you have a physical reminder.
