June 13, 2024 - Protection, Provision, Promises

1 Kings 11:1-12:19

Acts 9:1-25

Psalm 131:1-3

Proverbs 17:4-5

1 Kings 11:2 They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.

God constantly told his people not to marry with the nations outside of the Israelites. This had nothing to do with segregation or prejudice it was to protect his people. It is about being equally yoked as talked about in the New Testament. Just as the Israelites were not to marry people who worshiped other gods so we too should not marry those who worship other gods. That would be anyone who does not believe in Jesus. The reason is because He knows how great the temptation would be to follow the false god's of their spouse. God never tells us to not do something unless it is to protect us or provide something better for us.

1 Kings 11:9 The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. 10 Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command. 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.

The Lord became angry not because of who Solomon married but because of who Solomon worshiped.

1 Kings 11:31 Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. 32 But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe. 33 I will do this because they have forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did. 34 “‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees.

There is a penalty for disobeying God and worshiping false gods. But even in His discipline God is faithful. He never breaks a promise. When David wanted to build a temple for the Lord he was told that his son would be the one to do it and...

2 Samuel 7:14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do. 15 But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight. 16 Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’”

There was discipline but the line of David will stay on the throne. We can rest in God's promises as well. If we have professed Jesus as Lord we can trust in the promises of Jesus.

Romans 10:9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

And even when we sin He is faithful to forgive our sins.

1 John 1:9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

2 Corinthians 5:19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

He will never leave us or forsake us.

Matthew 28:20 ... And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The line of David was maintained. Jesus came from the line of David and anyone who believes in Him will never lose their salvation. The first line that we all came from is Adam and that is how sin entered the world. And through Jesus the world is offered His great gift of grace and through Him we are made righteous. That cannot be taken away

Romans 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
