June 2, 2024 - The Call Back

2 Samuel 19:11-20:13

John 21:1-25

Psalm 120:1-7

Proverbs 16:16-17

The call back is when you connect something from the past to a current situation. In comedy it is when a comedian will connect a joke at the end of a set to a joke at the beginning. In relationships it can be called an inside joke. We all have those things that we share with one other person that when we see or hear something that reminds us of it all we have to do is look at that other person and you know you are both thinking the same thing even if no one else is. Here Jesus uses the call back and it is no joke. Especially to Simon Peter.

Peter had gone back to fishing for fish and just as when Jesus called him the first time they caught no fish.

Now...

John 21:3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Then...

Luke 5:5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Now...

John 21:6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Then...

Luke 5:6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

Just as the first time he didn't know it was the Messiah telling them to lower their nets. But when they do they catch a miraculous haul of fish John & Peter get the call back of the situation.

Now...

John 21:7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

It is not walking on water but he does get out of the boat again. Jesus had cooked breakfast and told Peter to bring some of the fish they had caught so he goes back to the boat.

Now...

John 21:11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

The call back to the first catch of fish was significant because that is when Jesus made the connection for them to be fishers of men. There are a number of theories as to the significance of the number 153. I have heard that it represented all the different known types of fish of the time which would represent all the world. Which will connect them to the great commission. The really cool thing is that with the first catch of fish their nets begin to break but this time their nets do not. They are going to be catching a miraculous number of fish/people and not one of them will be lost. Every person that is to come into the kingdom will.

Then...

Luke 21:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.

The first time Jesus called Simon Peter he felt unworthy as a sinful man but Jesus lifted him up and called him to follow anyway. This time Peter also feels unworthy because he had denied Jesus but Jesus restores him. He lifts him up again and calls him to care for His flock. Jesus calls Peter to be a shepherd/leader/pastor of His church. Peter understands all this through the call back to the first time. This story is pretty cool of itself but when it is looked at from the call back the significance is huge.

It means the training wheels are coming off and everything that he had done and experienced with Jesus before His crucifixion is just a taste of what he will now witness and do with Jesus through the power of the Spirit.
