May 14, 2024 - God Looks at the Heart

1 Samuel 15:1-16:23

John 8:1-20

Psalm 110:1-7

Proverbs 15:8-10

1 Samuel 15:12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”

What a big difference from when Samuel first met Saul and told him that he was going to be king. The humility is gone.

1 Samuel 15:19 Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”

20 “But I did obey the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”

Saul doesn't think that he did anything wrong. He didn't take the animals his soldiers did. And since he is going to sacrifice the animals to God, he reasoned by his own understanding that it was not just okay but a good thing to do. But that's not what God told him to do. How often do we do the same thing? We find ways to justify the decisions we made that go against what God has told us to do. I am thinking of some things that I have recently been convicted of that I have modified and justified and reasoned on my own as to why that is good enough. I guess that means my heart is more interested in my own ideas and the opinions of the world than on God's ideas and opinions.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

When God sent Samuel to call David as king, Samuel was expecting someone who looked like a king on the outside, but God was looking for a man after His own heart. My heart needs to be right if I want to please God and want people to see Jesus in me.

I want to be a woman after God's heart but sometimes I don't make my decisions based on that. I have allowed things to be more important to me than God.

John 8:11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

I am so grateful that thanks to Jesus when we fail we are not rejected by God as Saul was. Because like the adulterous woman I give into temptation. Everyone does. That's why there was no one to condemn her. But as a Christian I need to do more than just walk away and not throw stones at others who sin. Please change my heart and mind give me strength to do what is right and pleasing to you. Please Lord help me to walk with you and leave behind the sins that you reveal to me and make me strong to resist the temptations that would distract me from you and your plan and purpose for me.

Create in me a clean heart O Lord and renew a steadfast Spirit within me! Amen!
