May 8, 2024 - Hearing v/s Listening

1 Samuel 2:22-4:22

John 5:24-47

Psalm 106:1-12

Proverbs 14:30-31

1Samuel 3:7 Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before. So the Lord called a third time, and once more Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”

Samuel didn't know that it was the Lord speaking him because it was the first time. The first time God speaks to us we probably won't recognize that it is God. We will explain it away is something or someone else. That is why it is important to have spiritual mentors in our lives that we can and do talk to about everything. They are more likely to recognize that it is God speaking to us than we are and they can help us to discern not only is He speaking but how to keep hearing and how to understand it.

John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

25“And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.

We need to listen for Jesus' voice. The truth of Jesus being the only path to salvation is a hard truth to believe for some people. It can be hard for someone who has never heard God's word to hear it. Until you are willing to hear Jesus voice you are dead in your sin. God speaks to us all the time and really anyone can hear but do you listen? Jesus assures us that if you listen when you hear His voice you will no longer be dead in your sin but you will be alive in Christ. So listen up.

John 5:37 And the Father who sent me has testified about me himself. You have never heard his voice or seen him face to face, 38 and you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me—the one he sent to you. 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.

If you open up scripture with a heart seeking for and a willingness to receive truth than you will hear the truth. You will hear the voice of the Father who will testify to you about the truth of Jesus. The entire bible points to Jesus and if you listen for His voice with your whole heart He will reveal Himself to you but if you refuse to come to Him your choices will be honored.

You have heard but are you listening?
